First Day of #Afterschool

The Hip After School Scholars program began September 4, 2018. On the first day of class each of the 85 students enrolled received a free mesh backpack filled with school supplies. Each backpack was equipped with calculators, crayons, erasers, glue pencil pouches, lead pencils, pens, scissors and spiral notebooks.

The backpacks and supplies were the result of a Rotary grant submitted and received by Abby Hartz, who submitted the grant request while she was a senior at Hazleton Academy of the Sciences. She selected the supplies for each backpack with the assistance of Marie Ernst, Principal. Abby was a member of the 2018 Communities that Care, (CTC) Student Outreach Committee. Abby is currently a freshman at Georgetown University.

Congressman Matt Cartwright at HIP!

HIP was honored to have US Congressman, Matt Cartwright, drop by our center to issue a Congressional commendation for winning the 2018 Atlantic/ Allstate Renewal Award. The Congressman had a chance to visit with the children from our summer camp and play carnival games designed by the campers.

HIP wins #RenewalAward

HIP is truly honored and humbled to have been selected as one of five recipients from more than 3,000 nominees to receive the 2018 Renewal Awards from The Atlantic and Allstate. This nationwide competition set out to “recognize local organizations driving positive change, finding innovative ways to make their communities stronger and bringing progress to the country.”

While we have certainly worked very hard at HIP for the past 4½ years we see this award as a tribute to our entire community. Without the partnerships we have formed with other outstanding local organizations that share our vision and the ongoing support from so many businesses we simply would not have even been a consideration for the Renewal Award. And we owe an additional “thank” you to the many volunteers who work selflessly along with us and make meeting our mission goals possible. We are truly indebted to so many of the people of Hazleton for your continued support.
